Hoyer Statement on the Congressional Budget Office's Long-Term Budget Outlook
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the release of the Congressional Budget Office's Long-Term Budget Outlook:
“The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office’s Long-Term Budget Outlook ought to be a wake-up call to Congress and our country. Unless we get America’s fiscal house in order and move back toward a fiscally sustainable approach to budgeting, we risk allowing compounding interest payments and our aging population to substantially grow our debt as a share of our economy, and thus weaken our economy, over the coming decades. The only way to fix our debt is to do it together – Democrats and Republicans working in good faith to reach the kind of big, balanced, and bipartisan compromise that we all know is necessary if we are to leave our children and grandchildren unencumbered by massive debt, free to write their own economic destiny, and if we are to afford the investments in growth and competitiveness that lead to more opportunities for our people.
“As long as House Republicans continue to insist that tax cuts somehow pay for themselves – or put forward budgets that place the burden of deficit reduction on the backs of the most vulnerable and rely on magic asterisks – we’re not going to be able to reach the kind of big and balanced budget agreement that we need. Neither will that happen as long as they keep demanding that we repeal the deficit-reducing Affordable Care Act without a serious plan to replace it. We need to be serious and realistic about the difficult decisions we face and about the need for real compromise. House Democrats will continue to push for commonsense budgeting policies that are fiscally sustainable and help us grow our economy over the long-term. I hope Republicans will stop pursuing ideological fantasies and join us.”
