Hoyer Statement on the Recent Violence in South Sudan
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the recent violence in South Sudan:
“I am deeply concerned about the violence breaking out in South Sudan, particularly as we mark the fifth anniversary of that country’s independence this past weekend. The people of South Sudan deserve a peaceful and democratic future free from political or ethnic violence. When I visited Juba in 2007, I saw firsthand the eagerness of South Sudanese to chart their own course forward and build a nation together. The civil conflict between President Kiir and former Vice President Machar threatens that future and has already led to the unnecessary deaths of hundreds and the displacement of tens of thousands of innocent civilians. I urge both sides to make sure this latest ceasefire holds, and I call on them to resume negotiations for a political settlement that ends the fighting permanently.”
