Hoyer Statement on Today's Opioid Conference Committee Meeting
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today ahead of this morning’s conference committee meeting on an opioid package, supporting a letter signed by Democrats serving on the committee announcing their intent to not sign a conference report that does not include adequate funding to address the opioid crisis in America:
“Our nation’s opioid crisis demands a serious, bipartisan response from Congress that includes sufficient funding to help states provide communities with the resources they need to combat this epidemic. I’ve been proud to work in partnership with Majority Leader McCarthy and with other Democrats and Republicans to promote bipartisan legislation on this issue, and I am disappointed that Republicans have repeatedly stood in the way of efforts to include critical funding for law enforcement, public health agencies and expanded access to substance abuse treatment. I strongly support efforts by Democratic conferees to add $920 million in fully offset funding in the conference report, and I urge Republicans to join us in supporting an amendment to add this funding into the final version. We must not delay in addressing this serious and pressing public health challenge.”
