Hoyer Statement on the Deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the recent deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile:
“I was deeply disturbed and angered to learn of the deaths over the past few days of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and Philando Castile near Minneapolis. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and the communities who mourn them, but thoughts and prayers are not enough. Too many young African-American men continue to die in encounters with law enforcement. When African-Americans have to teach their children to fear the police, there is something very wrong in our country. We must state unequivocally: black lives do – and must – matter.
“I fully support efforts by Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the Justice Department to conduct a federal investigation into what happened in Baton Rouge, and in the days ahead I expect more information will emerge detailing what occurred in Minnesota. It is important that we allow the investigative process to move forward in both cases so that justice can be served. We must do more as a nation to ensure that the enforcement of our laws is carried out in a way that protects the innocent, is blind to race or background, and restores the faith many have lost in those who protect and serve their communities.”
