Hoyer Statement on June Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for June:
“This morning’s jobs report, showing that our economy added 265,000 private sector jobs in June, marks the seventy-sixth straight month of job creation. Thanks to the hard work and perseverance of millions of American businesses and workers, we’ve brought our economy from recession to recovery. We’ve seen unemployment drop from a high of 10% in October 2009 to 4.9% today. But the global economy is changing, and Congress has a responsibility to help Americans navigate those changes and seize the new opportunities they present.
“That’s why I launched House Democrats’ new Make It In America plan last month to expand entrepreneurship and innovation, close the skills gap, build a twenty-first century infrastructure, and break down barriers to manufacturing in the United States. Congress needs to be a partner in the process of the work of making America an attractive place for private sector businesses to invest, scale up, and hire. Moreover, we need to make sure that the jobs created here lead to opportunities and an American Dream for the twenty-first century. We can’t do that if we disinvest in our economy, allow our politics to become mired in partisan gridlock, or fail to provide certainty to our markets.
“I continue to call on House Republicans to work with Democrats to put Make It In America proposals into practice and make Congress a place where businesses and workers can turn to for help and reassurance that they’re not facing economic challenges alone. They ought to know that their elected leaders are on their side, working to help them Make It In America.”
