Hoyer Statement on the Supreme Court's Decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a Texas law that has forced abortion clinics to close across the state:
"Today's Supreme Court ruling reaffirms what the Court had previously made clear: women have a constitutional right to make decisions about their own bodies and must not be denied access to safe, legal abortions. The Texas law that was struck down was a transparent attack on women and women's access to health care, passed in a brazen attempt to force clinics providing safe and legal abortion services to close across the state. Once again, many women are forced to travel hundreds of miles across state or national borders to procure an abortion – reminiscent of a time we thought long behind us when those who couldn't afford travel for an abortion were put at risk from unsafe procedures that cost lives.
"I've been proud to stand up for every woman's right to make her own health care decisions. Ensuring access to the full spectrum of reproductive health services is central to the protection of women’s constitutional rights. I applaud the Court for upholding this principle, and I will continue to fight for access to comprehensive health care options for women across the country."
