Hoyer Meets with Family of Gun Violence Victim
WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) met with Wendy Edmonds and J. Bobbe Frasier, Jr., siblings of Sylvia Frasier, one of the twelve victims killed in a mass shooting on September 16, 2013 at Washington Navy Yard. Three of Congressman Hoyer’s constituents, including Sylvia Frasier, were killed in the shooting. See below for a picture from their meeting, or click here.
“Last week, I joined House Democrats – led by Rep. John Lewis – for a sit-in on the House Floor to demand that House Republican leaders hold a vote on common-sense measures to address gun violence, such as expanding background checks and ensuring those on the terrorism watch list can’t purchase a gun,” said Congressman Hoyer. “Sylvia Frasier was a public servant who was doing her job, serving her country when she was taken from us by gun violence. Like so many other gun violence victims and their families, Sylvia and the Frasier family deserve a vote, and I am going to continue to demand it on their behalf. House Democrats won't stand down until we see action to address this epidemic of violence in our country.”
Last week, Congressman Hoyer and House Democrats held a sit-in on the House Floor for nearly 26 hours to demand a vote on gun violence measures. After House Republicans left town without holding an up-or-down vote on legislation, Congressman Hoyer and the Democratic Caucus pledged to hold a week of action to continue calling for a vote. Last week, during the sit-in, Wendy Edmonds and Bobbe Frasier wrote to Congressman Hoyer and visited Capitol Hill in support of House Democrats.
“Thank you for all of the hard work you and the Members of the Democratic Caucus are doing in fighting on behalf of the victims and their families who have been affected by gun violence,” Ms. Edmonds and Mr. Frasier wrote in the letter to Congressman Hoyer. “Even though ownership of a gun is a constitutional right, it comes with great social responsibility. The Frasier family stands with you in continuing the battle for common sense gun reform and responsibility. Stand strong! Do it for Sylvia, do it for all of the families like ours, do it for our country!”
