Hoyer Statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in observance of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:
"Today, across America and throughout the world, memorial candles will be lit and prayers will be offered in memory of all those who perished in the Shoah. We recite the names of places seared into humanity's collective consciousness - now-familiar names like Auschwitz, Dachau, Ponar, and Babi Yar. And we offer comfort to the families of survivors who each carry the name of a city or village whose centuries-old Jewish community was destroyed but that remains very much alive in their hearts and in their memories.
"Yom Ha'Shoah, while a day to mourn, is also an occasion to honor the unbreakable human spirit, which led so many to resist, to risk their lives to save others, and to serve as liberators. It provides us with a powerful affirmation that even in the darkest of moments in history there is a bright light of hope and faith that no evil can extinguish. It is by that same light that Israel and America will together overcome those who threaten genocide anew and who wage terror against innocents. And it will surely guide us as we continue our nations' work to eradicate the evil of anti-Semitism that fueled the Shoah.
"I join in marking this solemn day of remembrance. We must do more than resolve never to forget the horrors of the Shoah; it is in our hands to make certain it is never repeated."
