Hoyer Statement on April Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for April:
“I’m encouraged by today’s jobs report, which shows the private sector grew in April for the seventy-fourth consecutive month. While our economy added 171,000 jobs last month, many Americans across the country are feeling a great deal of uncertainty and anxiety about the economy and their future. That’s why Congress has a responsibility to ensure that American workers and businesses have the necessary tools to navigate a changing economy.
"While Speaker Ryan says he wants to pursue an agenda to build a more ‘Confident America,’ House Republicans have no plan to give certainty to an economy dealing with weakness abroad and challenges at home. Not only have they failed to consider legislation to support job creation and expand access to opportunities, but they haven’t passed a budget, they have refused to address an economic crisis impacting 3.5 million Americans living in Puerto Rico, and they are ignoring multiple public health emergencies. Again and again, they are telling the American people: 'you're on your own.'
"Democrats, on the other hand, are committed to ensuring that more of our people can make it in America. We are ready to work in a bipartisan fashion to restore confidence in the American people that government is on their side and ready to equip them with the resources to access opportunities in a changing economy. I urge House Republicans to abandon their partisan agenda and work with us to ensure that all of our people can succeed.”
