Hoyer Statement on the UN Security Council’s Vote to Impose New Sanctions on North Korea
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the UN Security Council’s unanimous approval of a resolution that imposes new sanctions against North Korea:
“Today’s unanimous decision by the UN Security Council to impose new sanctions against North Korea sends a strong message that the international community stands united against the Kim regime’s dangerous pursuit of ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear payloads. The North Korea nuclear tests earlier this year underscore the importance of American leadership in defense of our Japanese and Korean allies and in standing up to Pyongyang’s aggressive actions.
"I applaud the work of Ambassador Power and her team helping to forge a consensus on the Security Council, and I will continue to monitor developments closely as they relate to the implementation of today’s Security Council Resolution 2270. North Korea must abandon its policy of aggression and its efforts to arm itself with the world’s most dangerous weapons, in contravention of a number of Security Council resolutions, and I continue to call on the Kim regime to give those living in North Korea the chance for a better future based on democracy and human rights.”
