Hoyer Statement on the Decision to Expand Medicaid for Flint Residents
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to expand Medicaid eligibility for those in Flint, Michigan impacted by lead exposure:
“Today’s decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to expand Medicaid eligibility for those in Flint, Michigan impacted by lead exposure is a major step toward meeting our nation’s obligation to help the people of Flint who are suffering as a result of the Snyder Administration’s negligence and prioritization of cost savings over public health. With this announcement, 15,000 children and pregnant women who have been exposed to lead in Flint’s water supply now have access to Medicaid coverage. Additionally, 30,000 people currently receiving Medicaid benefits in Flint will be able to access expanded services.
“I traveled to Flint last week and met with residents, businesses, and non-profits involved in responding to the city’s water crisis. These citizens deserve every tool at the federal, state, and local level to identify and correct the extent of the lead exposure and treat its immediate and long-term effects. I will continue to join with my colleagues, including Rep. Kildee and the rest of the Michigan delegation who have been working hard on behalf of Flint, to ensure that they receive the support from Congress they need in the months and years ahead.”
