Hoyer Statement on Designation of Hezbollah as Terrorist Organization
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the Gulf Cooperation Council’s decision to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization:
“Yesterday's designation by the Gulf Cooperation Council of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization is an important step in further isolating this group and diminishing its influence. I recognize that the Council’s decision was not an easy one given the politics of the region, and that it required serious diplomacy among the nations involved, particularly the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia. I commend them for taking this step.
“Hezbollah is a bad actor, contributing to the destabilizing violence in Syria, continuing to undermine the independence of Lebanon, and terrorizing innocent families across Israel’s northern border with the constant threat of rockets and war. I look forward to seeing members of the Council act upon this designation and work to dismantle the Hezbollah network. I also encourage the United States to continue strengthening the capacity of our Gulf Cooperation Council partners to disrupt Iran’s financial terror network and illicit maritime activity – the bulwark of Hezbollah’s support – and enforcing the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act.”
