Hoyer Statement on President Obama’s Announcement That 20 Million Gained Health Coverage Under the ACA
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama announced that 20 million Americans have gained health insurance coverage since the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010:
“The President’s announcement today that 20 million Americans have gained health insurance coverage as a result of the Affordable Care Act is a significant measure of the law’s positive impact. I was proud to bring the Affordable Care Act to the House Floor as Majority Leader in 2010, and I’m proud that Democrats have worked hard to defend it against sixty-three Republican votes to repeal or undermine it.
“The Affordable Care Act is working. It protects women and those with pre-existing conditions against discrimination by insurance companies, provides a range of affordable coverage options through the state and federal marketplaces, ends annual and lifetime limits on coverage, and it ensures that young people up to age twenty-six can be covered under their parents’ plans. No American ought to live in fear of going into poverty as a result of developing a health problem or having a loved one fall ill. To that end, the Affordable Care Act provides peace of mind and economic security to Americans across the country. House Democrats will continue to protect Americans’ access to affordable, quality health care through the Affordable Care Act.”
