Hoyer Statement on January Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for January:
“The January jobs report, released this morning by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, provides further evidence that our economic recovery policies are working. A growth of 158,000 private sector jobs – the seventy-first consecutive month of private sector job increases – and the lowest unemployment rate since February 2008, along with much-needed wage gains, ought to be seen as very encouraging signs for the resilience of the American economy. But that economy is changing in profound ways, and new technologies are presenting us both with fresh opportunities and unforeseen challenges when it comes to creating good jobs that pay well and offer competitive benefits. That’s why Congress needs to show the American people that it is on their side by investing in the tools that help workers learn competitive skills, secure good jobs, and access opportunities like homeownership and a secure retirement.
“It is unfortunate that Republicans in Congress insist on promoting policies that leave American workers and their families to face these economic changes on their own. Instead of investing in areas that give Americans the tools they need to get ahead – like job training and increasing college affordability – Republicans want to disinvest in all of these areas. They have also worsened economic uncertainty by playing dangerous, partisan games with our creditworthiness and with costly government shutdowns. That’s not the way to grow jobs or make certain that America’s workers can secure those jobs and reach for a better future.
“House Democrats will continue to stand up for policies that prepare our nation and its people to find opportunities in a changing economy and to succeed. All Americans deserve the chance to Make It In America and a Congress that is on their side.”
