Hoyer Statement on the Obama Administration’s Efforts to Combat the Zika Virus
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Obama Administration announced a request for emergency funding to combat the spread of the Zika virus:
"The spread of the Zika virus remains of great concern in communities across America, especially among those who are pregnant or planning to start a family. With cases already appearing in our states and territories, it is imperative that the federal government educate the public, conduct research into treatments and a vaccine, and assist states and local governments in preventing transmission. Today's announcement by the White House that it will soon request supplemental appropriations to combat the public health threat from Zika provides Congress with a responsibility to act - and act quickly. I hope the House Majority will bring a supplemental bill to the Floor with all due speed so that Democrats and Republicans can show bipartisan solidarity against this disease."
