Hoyer Statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“I join in marking the eleventh annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which mourns the victims of Nazi genocide, including 6 million Jews. This day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a powerful symbol of humanity’s capacity for evil and our common responsibility to learn from the past in order to prevent its darkest chapters from recurring. When a new Holocaust is threatened, we must take those threats seriously, which is why the United States and our allies are determined to ensure that the tools of genocide and mass destruction cannot fall into the hands of those who would use them to make good on promises to destroy Israel and target Jews around the world with terror.
“As we mark this solemn observance together, let us remember that the modern-day commandment never to forget also means that we must actively remember the Shoah by teaching our children and grandchildren what happened and why. As the generation of survivors fades into history, our voices must grow ever stronger in telling their stories and keeping alive the lessons they impart.”
