Hoyer Statement on Sanctions Against North Korea
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed legislation giving the Administration additional authorities to pursue sanctions against North Korea:
“Today, Democrats and Republicans in the House stood together to demonstrate the Congress’s firm resolve in the face of the Pyongyang regime’s reckless development of nuclear weapons and its threats against our allies Japan and the Republic of Korea. Last week’s apparent nuclear test must not go unanswered. The sanctions bill we passed this evening will give the Administration additional authorities to target businesses and individuals engaged in financial and commercial dealings with North Korea and that support its nuclear weapons research, ballistic missile program, and systemic human rights violations. It also reiterates that the United States will not provide assistance to those governments that engage in arms trading with North Korea.
“For more than sixty years, North Koreans have been denied every basic freedom as they lived under the rule of dictators. Even as its regime terrorized its own people, North Korea has acquired the world’s most dangerous weapons while threatening its peaceful neighbors with war and devastation.
“The United States must continue to lead the world in standing up against North Korea. Congress remains united in solidarity with our allies and in support of those living under terror north of the 38th parallel. I look forward to the inevitable day when all Koreans will finally be free.”
