Hoyer, Pelosi, Reid, Democrats File Amicus Brief in U.S. Supreme Court to Support President Obama’s Immigration Executive Actions
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after joining House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, and 215 additional Members of Congress last night in filing an Amicus Brief in support of the Department of Justice’s petition for Supreme Court review of the President’s Immigration Executive Actions:
“I was proud to join in filing this amicus brief to make clear Congressional Democrats’ strong support for the legality of President Obama’s executive actions in creating the DAPA program and expanding the DACA program. When the Supreme Court considers this case next year, I am confident that the justices will allow the President’s actions to proceed. This Republican-led Congress has failed to take any meaningful action on comprehensive immigration reform, and Speaker Ryan has already made clear that such reform will not be on the House’s agenda for next year at all. The President was right to take what legal steps he could on his own in the absence of Congressional action to address our nation’s broken immigration system and prevent immigrant families from being split apart. Democrats will continue to push for comprehensive immigration reform legislation that keeps families together, secures our borders, creates an earned pathway to legal status, and helps us recruit talented innovators and entrepreneurs who can create jobs here in America.”
