Hoyer Statement on Democrats' Discharge Petition to Close Terrorist Gun Loophole
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) filed a discharge petition to force a vote on Congressman Peter King’s (R-NY) Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act:
“Congress has no responsibility greater than to keep Americans safe, and one of the most important things it can do is make certain that suspected terrorists cannot get their hands on weapons of mass slaughter like those used in the San Bernardino shootings last week. Keeping dangerous firearms out of the hands of those on terror watch lists ought to be an issue Congress can rally around. Sadly, the House Republican leadership is blocking a bill introduced by one of their own Members, Rep. Peter King, to do so.
“House Democrats are committed to preventing suspected terrorists from purchasing guns in our country that could be used to sow fear and murder in our communities, which is why Rep. Mike Thompson filed a motion to force the House to vote on Rep. King’s legislation. I hope Democrats and responsible Republicans can work together in the days and weeks ahead to achieve commonsense safeguards that keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those who mean to do Americans harm.”
