Hoyer Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of House Passage of the DREAM Act
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the fifth anniversary of House passage of the DREAM Act:
“As we mark the fifth anniversary of House passage of the DREAM Act, we ought to reflect on the unfinished work of fixing our broken immigration system and take the steps necessary to complete it. We have a moral responsibility – and sound economic cause – to resolve the legal status of tens of thousands of energetic and talented young people who were brought here as minors and desire a chance to help build a stronger future for the country they call home by contributing to our economy as innovators and job-creators. It is deeply unfortunate that the Republican leadership continues to deny Congress an opportunity to vote on the DREAM Act or comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
“I was incredibly proud to help bring the DREAM Act to the Floor as Majority Leader in 2010, when Democrats controlled Congress, and I will continue to defend the executive actions President Obama took to help DREAMers and their families, using his legal authority after Republicans refused to allow the House to act. That’s why I joined an amicus brief before the Supreme Court earlier this month in support of the President’s actions. As we keep fighting to uphold the President’s DAPA and expanded DACA programs, let us never lose sight of the larger challenge before us: to ensure that America’s doors are, as our Founders intended, open to those seeking a better life and all of the opportunities that freedom and hard work make possible.”
