Hoyer, House Democratic Leaders File Amicus Brief in House of Representatives v. Burwell
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after joining House Democratic leaders in filing an amicus brief today in support of the Administration’s implementation of healthcare cost-sharing reductions under the Affordable Care Act:
“I was proud to join my colleagues in the House Democratic Leadership, along with Ranking Members Lowey, Scott, Pallone, Conyers, Slaughter, and Levin, in filing an amicus brief today in support of the Obama Administration’s implementation of healthcare cost-sharing reductions under the Affordable Care Act. I am confident that our courts will correctly determine that they have no standing to settle a dispute between Congress and the Administration. Never in our history has the Supreme Court ever chosen to rule in a dispute between the legislative and executive branches of our government, and precedent dictates that this case will be rejected on standing as well.
“It is irresponsible that the House Republican Majority continues to waste taxpayers’ money and Congress’s time pursuing partisan lawsuits aimed at achieving what they failed to do on the House Floor in more than sixty votes: undermine or repeal the cost-savings and patient protections of healthcare reform. Millions who were previously uninsured are now covered, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, and the law continues to prevent insurance companies from imposing lifetime or annual limits on coverage. The Supreme Court has already affirmed the constitutionality of the law and sustained its provisions that help Americans afford their premiums through tax credits.
“If Republicans wish to show Americans how much they want to turn the clock back on health care reform, they can continue to fill the Congressional calendar with partisan votes to undermine or repeal the law. However, House Democrats will keep fighting to defend the Affordable Care Act so that millions of American can access affordable coverage.”
