Hoyer Statement on Senate Passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the Senate passed the Every Student Succeeds Act, which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and includes Full-Service Community Schools:
“Today, the Senate gave its approval to the Every Student Succeeds Act, a bipartisan reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) the House passed last week, clearing the way for President Obama to sign it into law. I’m glad that Democrats and Republicans were able to work together in both the House and Senate to reach the compromises necessary to invest in our students, teachers, and schools in a way that promotes learning, innovation, and our children’s safety and well-being.
“In particular, I am proud that this legislation includes a provision to encourage the expansion of the full-service community schools model for the delivery of wrap-around services for low-income families. Promoting full-service community schools has been a priority of mine for many years, and this legislation builds on earlier efforts to promote and expand this model, which brings existing critical community services for children and their parents – such as early childhood learning, medical and dental screenings, and career counseling – into schools.
“I want to thank Senators Brown and Manchin for sponsoring the full-service community schools amendment, along with Senate HELP Committee Chairman Alexander and Ranking Member Murray, who worked with House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline and Ranking Member Bobby Scott to ensure that a bipartisan compromise could be reached that includes this support for full-service community schools. I look forward to being on hand as the President signs the Every Student Succeeds Act in the coming days.”
