Hoyer Statement on Iranian Missile Tests
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on reports regarding Iranian missile tests:
“Reports of Iran’s continued testing of missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads are disturbing and ought to be taken very seriously by the United States and our international partners. Violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions must be met with unequivocal action by the U.N. Security Council.
“Running counter to the spirit of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), these tests demonstrate why the P5+1 must pursue the strictest nuclear verification and enforcement regime, under which the consequences for any breach are crystal clear. If the international community fails to respond aggressively to this violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1929, it will send a dangerous signal to Iran regarding our willingness to enforce the JCPOA and its accompanying Security Council resolution to the fullest extent.
“Given Iran’s actions, the Administration must take action, along with our international partners, to pursue sanctions on entities that support Iran’s advanced ballistic missile program. This is a challenge on which the United States needs to lead. We know that hardliners in Iran will do everything possible to undermine the JCPOA, and we must respond forcefully to deny them that opportunity.”
