More than $1B spent online on Thanksgiving day
Shoppers logged on on Thanksgiving day and spent $1.1 billion between midnight and 5 p.m. ET, according to Adobe Digital Index. That's a 22% increase from the same period last year, and 4% above the 18% growth that Adobe had projected. Out-of-stock rates were double normal levels, driven by toys like Star Wars and the Pie Face Game, which sparked interest after tallying more than 4 million views on YouTube. Other big sellers include 4K TVs, Sony PlayStation 4 , and the iPad Air 2 . "Out of stock is an even bigger problem today than we expected, so shoppers waiting until tomorrow will find it more difficult than ever to acquire hot items," said Tamara Gaffney, principal analyst for Adobe Digital Index. Smartphones generated more than 25% of online sales, with $283 million in sales. Adobe's figures are based on 100 million visits to more than 4,500 U.S. retail sites.
