Hoyer: Defeat of Amendments Shows a Strong Majority Supports Reopening the Export-Import Bank
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after a majority of Members in the House voted to defeat amendments to the highway bill that would threaten reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank:
“Tonight, Democrats and Republicans came together once again to send a resounding message that the Export-Import Bank ought to be reopened immediately. In defeating a series of amendments that would have put the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank in jeopardy, we showed the American people that a strong majority continues to support the Bank. I want to thank the Republicans, led by Reps. Fincher and Lucas, who joined with Democrats to defeat these amendments for their courage in defense of American exporters and their employees.
“With legislation to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank included in the highway bill, House and Senate conferees can now move forward on completing a final version that will protect export-driven jobs. But we need not wait for conferees to meet; I urge Senator McConnell to bring to the Senate Floor the standalone Export-Import Bank reauthorization that the House passed last week by a vote of 313-118 so it can reach the President’s desk without delay. Finally, I want to thank, once more, Ranking Member Waters, Ranking Member Moore, and Rep. Denny Heck for their tireless work to achieve this bipartisan victory for American workers.”
