Hoyer Statement on President Obama's Keystone XL Pipeline Announcement
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama's announcement rejecting construction of the Keystone XL pipeline:
“I am disappointed that the Administration has decided to reject the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline outright. I share concerns about the environmental and climate effects of the pipeline’s construction and the production and use of this type of crude that have yet to be addressed adequately, but I continue to believe that bipartisan consensus could have been reached that would have enabled this project to move forward in a way that alleviates such concerns. I also hope the White House took into consideration how today’s decision will affect the creation of construction jobs in America’s heartland and its positive economic impact.
“I hope Congress will hear more from the President soon about his plans to ensure continued responsible energy production, while addressing climate change, to transport this same crude safely – as it will continue to come into our country by other means – and to establish clear requirements for developing the energy infrastructure we need to meet the economic challenges of the twenty-first century.”
