Hoyer Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Higher Education Act
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the fiftieth anniversary of the Higher Education Act, which was signed into law on November 8, 1965:
“This Sunday marks the fiftieth anniversary of President Johnson signing the Higher Education Act into law. That landmark legislation, part of the President’s ‘Great Society’ initiative, made significant federal investment in our nation’s colleges and universities, with the goal of helping more students access quality, affordable higher education that leads to good jobs and a more competitive workforce. Title IV of the law created student financial aid programs that have helped millions of Americans, including low-income and first-generation college students, afford college, and, after the addition of Title IX protections to the law in 1972, the Higher Education Act has required equal access for men and women.
“Over the years, I’ve been proud to support reauthorizations of the law to strengthen it and make it easier for more Americans to receive a college education. As the House Education and Workforce Committee continues work on a new reauthorization bill, we must address many important issues such as the large amount of debt with which students are burdened, campus safety, and making college more affordable and more accessible. I look forward to working with Ranking Member Bobby Scott and Committee Democrats to ensure that such a bill continues the bipartisan tradition in Congress of robust support for higher education in America.”
