Hoyer Statement on 2016 House Floor Schedule
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) issued the following statement today after the House legislative schedule for calendar year 2016 was released:
“Today, the House Republican leadership unveiled the legislative schedule for 2016. While Republicans have spent much of this year dealing with their own deep divisions and wasting time on partisan legislation, the American people expect Congress to pursue a positive agenda to grow our economy, support job creation, and address the challenges confronting our nation. The Republican Majority has wasted far too much time mired in dysfunction and governing from crisis to crisis, and it’s time for their leadership to work with Democrats to get things done for the American people.
“Last week, the American people saw what Congress can do if Democrats and Republicans work together. Passing legislation to reopen the Export-Import Bank, which would help save and create good jobs, and coming together to prevent a dangerous default and lessen the chance of a government shutdown, Congress resorted not to governing by crisis but to governing by consensus and compromise. I hope that House Republicans will see the start of the new Ryan Speakership as an opportunity to turn the page on bitter partisanship and instead work across the aisle with Democrats to make progress on meeting a range of pressing challenges.
“Before the second session of the 114th Congress begins, there is still work we must finish this year, including passing a long-term highway bill and completing work on appropriations by December 11. If we work together, Democrats and Republicans can provide much-needed certainty to American families and businesses. I will continue to encourage bipartisanship throughout the remainder of the 114th Congress, and I hope that, looking ahead to 2016, we can make next year’s session a productive one for the people we serve.”
