House Takes Bipartisan Action for Our Economy; Democrats Urge Speaker Ryan to Work
On Bipartisan Basis to Get More Done
for the American People
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, I was pleased to see the House take important bipartisan action on behalf of American families and workers. First, a majority of Republicans joined with Democrats to pass a bill to reopen the Export-Import Bank, which plays a critical role in safeguarding our economic competitiveness and creating well-paying jobs here at home. In addition, the House passed a bipartisan budget agreement that lifts sequestration level caps partially for both defense and nondefense priorities and lessens the chance of another damaging government shutdown in December. While I am pleased that the agreement replaces the sequester for two years, we still need a long-term solution to our fiscal challenges that allows us to invest in a stronger economic future.
The House also elected a new Speaker, Paul Ryan, and I hope he will work with Democrats to address our nation's challenges. He has an important decision about what kind of leader he wants to be: one who wants to get things done in the spirit of bipartisanship, or one who panders to the most extreme Members of his party and adds to their record of obstruction and dysfunction. I hope he will choose to work on a bipartisan basis, as we did this week, so that we can achieve progress for the American people.
House Democrats continue to listen to constituents in our districts to learn more about the economic opportunities and challenges that confront them. On Wednesday, I held the third hearing in a series called “Make It In America: What’s Next?,” where we heard from eighteen House Democrats on how what families and businesses in their districts need to get ahead. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues and stakeholders on how Democrats can best update our Make It In America jobs plan to ensure that it creates an environment that encourages businesses to create jobs here in America.
I’d also like to remind everyone that open enrollment for health insurance through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace begins this Sunday, November 1 and runs through January 31, 2016. Americans will be able to shop for affordable health insurance plans and either renew their health care coverage or enroll for the first time. Those seeking coverage can visit www.healthcare.gov to learn more about coverage options and eligibility for tax credits.
