Hoyer Statement on Treasury Department Proposals for Puerto Rico
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the Treasury Department released legislative proposals to address Puerto Rico's debt challenge:
“By putting forward legislative proposals to address Puerto Rico’s debt challenge, the Obama Administration is making it clear that additional tools are needed to secure a stronger and more sustainable economic future for the island. The Administration’s reform and restructuring proposals are a simple and clear recognition that it is no longer reasonable to expect the residents of Puerto Rico to endure the daily challenges and uncertainty that the Commonwealth’s fiscal challenges pose. I will work within Congress and with the Administration toward the enactment of its proposals and will monitor and help provide resources for the Administration’s ongoing efforts to make sure we are doing all we can with our current authority to support Puerto Rico in these difficult fiscal times.
“I have been proud to work with Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi to ensure that the interests of Puerto Ricans are represented and respected in Washington. With a recognition of Puerto Ricans’ right to determine their own future, we must continue to work together toward opportunity and prosperity in the years to come.”
