Democrats, Republicans Work Together to Force a Vote on Ex-Im; Democrats Continue to Urge Action to Pay our Nation’s Bills, Reach Budget Agreement
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Today, the House of Representatives took important bipartisan action on behalf of American workers and businesses. For months, I have been urging Republican leaders to allow a vote to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank so that American businesses will be able to compete with global competitors on a level playing field and create jobs here at home. The majority of Members of the House support the Bank, and today, Democrats joined with 42 Republicans to sign a petition to force a vote to reopen it. I’m proud that Democrats and responsible Republican Members came together so that the House will finally have the opportunity to work its will on an issue that will strengthen our economy and expand opportunity.
As the Republican party struggles with internal division, I will continue to urge the current leadership, Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader McCarthy, to put the interests of the American people before that of their most conservative Members. The American people expect us to govern responsibly and address pressing legislative issues, such as paying our nation’s bills and reaching a budget agreement to replace the sequester. I hope that when the House returns to session following the October District Work Period that Republican leaders will work with Democrats to address these time-sensitive legislative priorities and avoid another manufactured crisis.
