Hoyer: Democrats and Republicans Must Work Together to Prevent Default WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the House and Senate were notified by the Treasury Department that extraordinary measures to prevent a default will be exhausted on November 5: "This afternoon, the House and Senate received a letter from the Treasury Department providing notice that the extraordinary measures employed to avoid a default on our debt will be exhausted on November 5. This means that Democrats and Republicans must work together swiftly to prevent a default, which would spell economic disaster. "Before he leaves office at the end of the month, Speaker Boehner has a responsibility to bring legislation to the Floor to raise the debt limit so that the full faith and credit of the United States is not weakened and our economy is not undermined. House Democrats are ready to work with Republicans to take the necessary steps to avert the danger that would result from nearing a default once again."
