Hoyer Statement on September Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September:
“According to the monthly Bureau of Labor Statistics report released today, our economy gained 118,000 private sector jobs in September, making it the sixty-seventh straight month of private sector job growth. While it’s positive that we continue to add jobs, Republicans in Congress are putting at risk the historic gains of the last few years.
“Instead of coming together to promote fiscal sustainability and greater economic certainty or making bipartisan investments to ensure that America is the best place to do business and hire workers, the Republican Majority in this Congress has done the opposite, sowing uncertainty for entrepreneurs, investors, and families. It has refused to reopen the Export-Import Bank or pass a long-term highway bill – measures we know will help save and create jobs. Moreover, it has imposed its budgeting strategy of sequester, which disinvests in the areas that are proven to help businesses create jobs, such as education, research and innovation, workforce development, and infrastructure.
“I urge Republicans to work with Democrats over the next several weeks to avert the next preventable crisis – and restore confidence throughout the American economy – by reaching agreement on a deal to complete the appropriations process and replace the sequester with a responsible and fiscally sustainable alternative. At the same time, we must avoid a default crisis that could risk a further downgrade of our creditworthiness and damage our economy. Congress can – and must – step up and be part of the solution to our economic challenges, not part of the problem.”
