Hoyer Statement on Departure of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after it was announced that Secretary Arne Duncan will depart the Department of Education:
“I join in thanking Secretary Duncan for his service to our country. Under his leadership, the Department of Education has undertaken an ambitious effort to raise standards, promote innovation, and bring hands-on STEM learning into the classroom.
“Secretary Duncan has been a tireless advocate for early childhood education, and he has helped promote President Obama’s Pre-School for All program. I was proud to welcome him in 2009 to one of Maryland’s Judith P. Hoyer Early Child Care and Family Education Centers to see firsthand the full-service community school model being applied. He has also pushed Congress to enact a bipartisan reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that makes sure students in America are learning the skills necessary to succeed in college and careers, which is critical to growing a more competitive economy for the twenty-first century. The Race to the Top program he championed has helped states and local school districts invest in hiring new teachers, make curricula more rigorous, and provide additional resources to the lowest-performing schools. Secretary Duncan also supported increases in the Pell Grant program to help students afford higher education, one of several initiatives he led to increase the number of Americans who attend college.
“I wish Secretary Duncan, his wife Karen, and their children all the best as he prepares to step down and return home to Chicago. I look forward to working with Acting Secretary John B. King Jr. to ensure that the Department of Education has the tools it needs to invest in our students and help them achieve success.”
