Hoyer Statement on Pope Francis’ Address to Congress WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Pope Francis' address to the Joint Meeting of Congress: “I was proud to join in welcoming Pope Francis to Congress this morning for his historic address. His exhortation to the Representatives of the American people that we who serve ‘are called to defend and preserve the dignity of [our] fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good’ was a powerful reminder of Congress’s responsibility to be an instrument of equality and opportunity. “I was glad to hear His Holiness remind Congress of our duty to the most vulnerable in our society by continuing the fight against poverty and working to ensure that our economic policies foster real opportunities for workers and their families to pursue the American Dream. His call for action to address the rights and dignity of immigrants is especially timely – both because of the humanitarian crisis in Europe and the unfinished work of fixing our broken immigration system here at home. At the same time, he continued his poignant call for international cooperation to protect the environment and meet the challenge of climate change. “I hope Democrats and Republicans will work together to address the challenges facing our nation and the world in a spirit of comity and cooperation befitting Pope Francis’s good counsel.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources
