Hoyer Statement on the Resignation of Speaker Boehner
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation:
"During the nearly five years of his speakership and throughout his twenty-five years in Congress, John Boehner has been a true gentleman and a consistent advocate for the enduring American principle that hard work ought to lead to opportunity. He has never forgotten his roots as the son of Cincinnati small business owners, learning the value of honest work at a young age clearing tables and sweeping floors. Speaker Boehner brought this same ethic to public service, first as an Ohio State Representative, then as a Congressman, and later as the leader of his party in the House. All of us who have served with him have appreciated his straightforward manner, his friendship, and his deep love of country.
"Yesterday, Speaker Boehner fulfilled a years-long dream by welcoming the Pope to address a historic joint meeting of Congress. His Holiness told us: 'You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good, for this is the chief aim of all politics.' Sitting behind him in the Speaker's chair was a man who has made this his own chief aim throughout a distinguished career in service to our nation. Though we have sparred in heated debate at times, we found opportunity to work together and promote bipartisanship at others, and I thank Speaker Boehner for his service and leadership. I join in wishing him and his family the best as he prepares to leave the House."
