Hoyer Statement on President Obama's Executive Order on Paid Sick Leave
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama signed an executive order requiring federal contractors to offer their employees up to seven days of paid sick leave per year:
"Today's executive order represents an important step forward for workers' rights and the expansion of opportunity for those trying hard to make it in America. It is fitting that this executive order, which requires federal contractors to provide their employees with seven days of paid sick leave per year, is being signed on Labor Day, when we celebrate the hard-won victories of the labor movement on behalf of workers' rights.
"Congress has a responsibility to consider legislation protecting all workers in our economy from having to choose between losing their jobs or staying home to care for themselves or for a sick child. Not only is this the right thing to do, it makes economic sense as well. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Democratic Caucus to advance such legislation and work to pass it into law. I commend President Obama and Secretary Perez for their unwavering commitment to America's workers."
