Hoyer Statement on the the Peace Agreement in South Sudan WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the peace agreement signed by the opposition and other stakeholders in South Sudan: “After over a year and a half of civil conflict in South Sudan, the signing of a peace agreement by the opposition and other stakeholders earlier this week is welcome news. For far too long, the people of South Sudan have experienced displacement, hunger, disease, and other suffering as a result of the violence. It is unacceptable that President Kiir has refused to sign the agreement, and I join the Obama Administration in urging him to do so without further delay. Failure to sign the agreement in the next two weeks and to promptly implement a ceasefire ought to result in further sanctions from the United States and our international partners. When I visited Juba in 2007, the South Sudanese were full of hope for a bright, peaceful future, and it is far past time that this conflict and violence comes to an end so that they may realize that future.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources
