Hoyer Statement on the Senate's Full Service Community School Act Amendment
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate adopted language from the Full Service Community Schools Act as an amendment to the Every Child Achieves Act:
“Today, the Senate took a major step forward to promote the full-service community schools model across the country, adopting as an amendment to the Every Child Achieves Act the language of the Full Service Community Schools Act that I’ve introduced for several years in the House. I thank Senators Brown and Manchin for their leadership in this effort.
“Full-service community schools make a real difference in the lives of low-income students by locating critical existing services in schools where students and their families can access them more easily. Since a network of full-service community schools was launched in Maryland, it has led to a narrowing of the achievement gap. Named ‘Judy Centers’ after my wife, who was an early childhood education administrator, Maryland’s full-service community schools are helping prepare students to succeed in elementary school and beyond and ensure that parents have the tools they need to support learning. I applaud the Senate for incorporating my legislation into the Every Child Achieves Act and House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Bobby Scott for including this legislation in his Democratic alternative, and I hope the House and Senate will go to conference soon and produce a final version that includes support for full-service community schools.”
