Hoyer Statement on South Sudan Independence Day WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking South Sudan's fourth anniversary of independence, which occurred on July 9, 2011: “This week, as South Sudanese celebrate the fourth anniversary of their independence, I join in calling on President Kiir and former Vice President Machar to stop the violence and work together to bring their nation the peace, stability, and leadership it deserves. “I will never forget my visit to Juba in 2007, when the streets were filled with the palpable spirit of hope and yearning for an independent future rooted in democracy and economic possibilities. Sadly, too much of the past four years has been consumed by civil violence, displacement of refugees, hunger, disease, and despair. But the dream of peace and opportunity is still attainable, and I urge the country’s leaders to put the future of South Sudan and its people ahead of short-term political considerations. “I send my best wishes to the people of South Sudan and pray for their continued resilience and hopefulness through this difficult period – and that better times may soon be at hand.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources.
