Hoyer Statement on Republican Amendment Allowing Confederate Flag at National Parks and Cemeteries WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans offered an amendment allowing the Confederate flag to continue to be displayed at National Parks and cemeteries: "It is appalling that House Republicans stealthily offered an amendment to the FY2016 Interior Appropriations bill last night that would require the National Park Service to continue allowing the display or sale of the Confederate flag – less than twenty-four hours after the House adopted amendments restricting its use. That racist, divisive flag of slavery, segregation, and secession is not an appropriate symbol to sell or fly in our National Parks and cemeteries run by the National Park Service. "It is time to put that symbol behind us as a nation. I hope Republicans will join with Democrats to defeat this amendment and adopt provisions instead that remove the Confederate flag from those public places where it should not be flown or sold."
