Hoyer Remarks at First
"Make It In America: What's Next?" Hearing
Hoyer: We Must Ask Ourselves How Best to Adapt the Make It In America Plan to One That Will Help Us Address New Economic Challenges, Lay Groundwork for Growth and Prosperity
WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) hosted the first “Make It In America: What’s Next?” hearing today to explore how the economy has, and hasn’t, changed since the Make It In America plan was created in 2010, and what families and businesses need in 2015 to Make It In America. Today, House Democratic Members spoke about the economic successes and challenges facing their districts, and how we can continue to build and maintain a robust and competitive economy and job market for the future. Below are Whip Hoyer’s opening remarks as prepared for delivery:
“Good afternoon.
“I’m now pleased to call this hearing to order and welcome all of you to what will be the first in a series of hearings to explore the question ‘Make It In America: What’s Next?’
“Five years ago, at a time when our nation was still working to recover from the great recession, House Democrats introduced a jobs plan that has focused on creating jobs and making our private sector more competitive for the twenty-first century global economy.
“We’ve had a number of important successes, including the enactment of sixteen pieces of Make It In America legislation – including reauthorization of the America Competes Act in 2011, passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and legislation to help clear the patent application backlog and reform the filing process for innovators.
“Having achieved significant economic recovery gains, we must now ask ourselves how best to adapt the Make It In America plan to one that will help us address the new economic challenges we face and lay the groundwork for growth and prosperity for the future.
“These hearings will provide an opportunity for Members to hear from one another, from employers, from workers, from innovators, from entrepreneurs, and from economists and other experts about what they believe families and businesses need in order to Make It In America today.
“Over the next several months, we’ll be revamping the Make It In America plan so that it better reflects the needs of our economy in 2015 and beyond to help create good jobs and ensure that both businesses and workers have the tools necessary to compete and succeed in the global marketplace.
“Part of this is recognizing that Make It In America is about more than manufacturing.
“With new technologies and new ways to connect Americans with economic opportunity, our plan must address a wider range of issues in order to achieve our most fundamental goal: making sure that everyone who works hard and takes responsibility can make it in America.
“I look forward to hearing from our colleagues at this first hearing about ways the Make It In America plan can be adapted and expanded to help their constituents achieve that goal.”
