Hoyer Statement on Two-Year Anniversary of Senate Passage of Bipartisan Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill
Hoyer Urges Passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform to Restore America’s Role as a Beacon of Liberty, Hope, Opportunity
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the two-year anniversary of the Senate passage of a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill on June 27, 2013:
“Two years ago tomorrow, the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill with a strong bipartisan vote. Two years later, the Republican-led House has yet to do its part and consider legislation to fix our broken immigration system, despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of Americans support comprehensive reform. With millions of undocumented immigrants living in the shadows, waiting patiently for their opportunity to contribute fully to building a stronger future for our country, it is time for Congress to act. Pursing comprehensive immigration reform is not only a moral obligation, but it will also grow our economy, create jobs, and reduce the deficit by more than $900 billion over the next twenty years.
“House Democrats will continue to work together to advance meaningful immigration reform legislation that will establish a pathway to citizenship and keep families together. It is time for House Republican leaders to listen to faith groups, business leaders, innovators, farmers, labor organizations, and Members of their own party who support comprehensive reform. As Speaker Boehner said when he took the gavel in 2011, the House works best when it is able to work its will, and I urge him to bring to the Floor comprehensive immigration reform and allow the House to debate it, amend it, and pass it so we can restore America’s role as a beacon of liberty, hope, and opportunity to the ‘huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.’”
