Hoyer Statement on June Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for June:
"For the sixty-fourth consecutive month, our economy continues to create private-sector jobs, with 223,000 more added in June. At the same time, the report shows the unemployment rate has fallen to 5.3%, its lowest point since May 2008. This is good news for our economic recovery and for all those who are still looking for work. However, we must not rest until everyone who is looking for employment can find a job that pays well and provides access to opportunities that secure a place in our middle class.
"House Democrats continue to focus relentlessly on finding innovative ways to promote private sector job growth. One top priority is reopening the Export-Import Bank so businesses can access export financing assistance that helps level the playing field against foreign competitors. I am deeply disappointed that Congressional Republicans allowed the Export-Import Bank's authorization to expire at the end of June, and I will continue to push for bipartisan action to restore its charter authority. I urge Republican leaders to also take action to reauthorize the Highway Trust Fund, which supports thousands of construction jobs and helps businesses move goods to market more efficiently.
“I hope Republicans will work with Democrats in a constructive and bipartisan way to make the investments in exports, infrastructure, and competitiveness that our businesses and workers seek.”
