Hoyer Statement on Pope Francis' Encyclical
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si”:
“The encyclical released by Pope Francis today on the environment is a powerful call to planetary stewardship and a reminder of human consequences of pollution, climate change, and degradation of our natural resources. Pope Francis, the spiritual leader to the world’s Catholics, has earned the respect and admiration of people across all faiths and from every nation for his calls to treat every individual with equal dignity and to perform acts of charity and compassion to alleviate human suffering. His message today is clear: the link between climate change and the plight of the world’s poor cannot be ignored. Those with the fewest resources will be impacted the most by drought, storms, extreme temperatures, rising sea levels, and competition over resource scarcity.
“All of us share a responsibility to help reduce carbon pollution and mitigate the effects of climate change – by deploying cleaner industrial technologies, investing in renewable energy resources, and combating poverty wherever it is found. I hope Congress and the Administration can work together, in a bipartisan way, to ensure that the United States is doing its part to achieve these goals and contribute to what must be a worldwide effort to protect the most vulnerable from climate change.”
