Hoyer: CBO Report Shows Deficit Would Explode If the Affordable Care Act Is Repealed WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Congressional Budget Office issued a report showing what would happen if the Affordable Care Act is repealed: “Today’s CBO report makes clear that repealing the Affordable Care Act, as Republicans have consistently voted to do, would explode the deficit, cause millions to lose their insurance coverage, and raise costs for seniors on Medicare. According to the CBO’s findings, the deficit would be increased by $353 billion over the next ten years – and $3.5 trillion over the following decade – should Republicans’ attempts to repeal the law succeed. Even when using the controversial ‘dynamic scoring’ approach to budget projections, which Republicans now force the CBO to include along with its official estimate, repeal would still cost taxpayers $137 billion. At the same time, the number of uninsured would increase by 19 million in the first year alone, with another 5 million over the decade to follow. “The choice is clear – in fact, there is no real choice at all: the Affordable Care Act, with its patient protections and cost savings, is not only, as Speaker Boehner said, ‘the law of the land,’ but is also working as intended to make affordable, high-quality health care more accessible to all. I urge Republicans to cancel the sixtieth vote to undermine or repeal the law, which they have scheduled for next week, and instead work with Democrats to ensure that it benefits as many Americans as possible.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources
