Hoyer Statement on Third Anniversary of DACA
Hoyer: Congress Ought to Take Action to Keep Families Together
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the third anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“Three years ago, President Obama took a bold and decisive step in the face of inaction by the Republican-led House on immigration to create the DACA program that has helped nearly 700,000 DREAMers remain in this country. For many of these DREAMers, who were brought here as minors through no fault of their own, America is the only home they have known, and all they wish to do is obtain legal status and help build a stronger future for their communities and our nation.
“The implementation of President Obama’s expanded DACA, unveiled last year along with the DAPA program to keep the parents of citizens or DACA-eligible DREAMers from being deported, has been held up by a partisan lawsuit in Texas, and House Republicans have now voted three times to prevent DACA and DAPA from moving forward – effectively voting to split immigrant families apart. If Republicans wish to change our nation’s immigration policies, they ought to work with Democrats to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation instead of ignoring the problem of our broken immigration system and voting to deport parents and children.
“I will continue to stand up for America’s immigrants and for the tradition of immigration that made our nation a beacon of liberty and opportunity and has strengthened our economy for generations. Congress ought to take action to keep families together and make sure that we can attract the best and brightest innovators and entrepreneurs from around the world. I hope Democrats and Republicans can work together to achieve these goals and make sure that our immigration policies reflect our values and our history.”
