Hoyer Statement on Labor-HHS and Financial Services Appropriations Bills
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Republicans on the Appropriations Committee marked up the Financial Services appropriations bill in full committee and the Labor-HHS bill in subcommittee:
"Today's action in the Appropriations Committee shows, once again, how 'unrealistic and ill-conceived,' as Chairman Hal Rogers put it, the Republican sequester strategy truly is. By advancing the Labor-HHS-Education and Financial Services appropriations bills, Republicans on the Appropriations Committee have finally revealed their cards, detailing which domestic investments must be slashed to fit their draconian sequester budget strategy.
"The Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee, which funds a range of beneficial programs ranging from medical research to public schools to job training – approved a bill cutting $3.7 billion from last year and $14.6 billion below the Administration’s request. Likewise, the full committee approved a Financial Services bill at a level $1.6 billion lower than last year and $4.8 billion less than the Administration requested, undermining the watchdogs of our financial system.
“While getting around limits on defense spending through a budget gimmick misrepresenting Overseas Contingency Operations funding, Republicans today showed just how badly their sequester strategy would disinvest in key domestic priorities. It’s time for my Republican colleagues to come back to reality and negotiate a budget agreement that replaces the sequester caps in a fiscally responsible way so that we can make the investments necessary to grow our economy and protect our national security.”
