Hoyer Statement on May Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for May: “This morning’s jobs report tells the story of an economic recovery that continues to advance, with 262,000 private sector jobs created in May. With sixty-three consecutive months of private sector job growth, the unemployment rate at levels unseen since the summer of 2008, and life returning to hourly earnings, it is becoming clear that the depths of the worst recession in a generation are behind us.
“Congress must now take steps to invest in future growth in opportunity and economic competitiveness so that we don't face another such recession. Investments like reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank, expanding infrastructure networks through a long-term transportation bill, strengthening our education system, promoting research and innovation, and providing job training to those who need it to get hired or get ahead in their careers. Confrontation and sequestration have stymied the recovery long enough. I continue to urge Republicans to put partisanship aside and work with Democrats to replace the budget sequester and work toward an agenda that invests in economic competitiveness and job creation and provides certainty so that more of our businesses and workers can make it in America.”
