Hoyer Statement on the 50th Anniversary of Head Start Hoyer: Head Start is One of the Most Important Investments We Make Toward Closing the Achievement Gap, Ensuring Every Child Has an Equal Shot at Success in School WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the fiftieth anniversary of Head Start: “Today, I join in marking the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of Head Start, one of the Johnson Administration's key anti-poverty initiatives and still one of the most important investments we make toward closing the achievement gap. Since its creation, Head Start has broadened its scope from a summer catch-up program to provide year-round early childhood education, nutrition assistance, and health screenings. Since 1965, Head Start has laid the foundation for a more successful beginning to elementary school for more than 30 million children and their families in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. territories. “As a champion of early childhood education, I have been proud to support Head Start in Congress as well as to promote the full-service community school model as an innovative way to complement Head Start's work. Now is not a time to be cutting funding from Head Start and other early childhood education initiatives, as many Republicans in Congress have voted to do. Instead, we ought to recommit ourselves to supporting early childhood education and this crucial program and work together, in a bipartisan way, to ensure that every child in America has an equal shot at success in school and beyond.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources.
